Do this now: register for 2017 second quarter bonus earning and World of Hyatt promotion

March 31, 2017/ Free-quent Flyer

The second quarter of 2017 is right around the corner, and that means it's time for your friendly reminder to register for bonus earning on credit cards with quarterly rotating bonus categories, and some suggestions to maximize their value.

Chase Freedom

Next quarter each of your Chase Freedom cards earns 5 Ultimate Rewards points on the first $1,500 spent at grocery stores and drugstores. These categories are layups, with easy opportunities to manufacture spend in virtually every part of the country. If you were particularly inclined to be strategic you might wait to see if we get another grocery store promotion like the one that ended yesterday and try to stack the opportunities, but personally I'm not overthinking it. I have two Chase Freedoms and expect to have maxed out my bonus earnings by Sunday afternoon (CVS limits prepaid card purchases to $2,000 per rolling 24-hour period).

Activate bonus earning on each of your Chase Freedom cards separately here.

Discover it

The Discover it offers 5% cash back at home improvement stores and wholesale clubs next quarter. If you took advantage of one of the dozens of offers for cheap or discounted wholesale membership in the last year, then your best bet is to visit Sam's Club and see if you can find some PIN-enabled prepaid debit cards. I've never set foot in a Sam's Club, let alone manufactured spend at one, so I'm not sure what options they have available, but you may be able to find prepaid debit cards issued by Greendot Bank, US Bancorp, or Sunrise Bank.

Log into your Discover account to activate next quarter's bonus categories here.

Citi Dividend

Citi Dividend cards throttle bonus spending slightly differently from the other quarterly bonus credit cards: your total cash back is limited to $300 per calendar year, but you can earn the $300 through any combination of bonused and unbonused spend throughout the year. That means it's best to hold back on putting any spend on a Citi Dividend card until they have a particularly lucrative bonus category.

This year, that category falls in the second quarter, when you'll earn 5% cash back on purchases at drugstores and fitness clubs. After taking care of my Chase Freedom cards at CVS this weekend, I'll be maxing out my Citi Dividend card by spending $6,000 there over the next three days, thereby earning the maximum $300 annual cash back.

Activate your bonus earning here.

US Bank Cash+

Unlike the other cards here, US Bank allows you to pick 2 categories in which to earn 5% cash back on up to $2,000 in total spend. In the second quarter of 2017, your options are:

Slim pickings! If you commute by train then ground transportation might be worth picking, especially if you can add a large amount of value to a commuter pass and don't have another card that bonuses travel purposes generally (many people would consider the 3 Ultimate Rewards points earned by a Chase Sapphire Reserve more valuable than 5% cash back). Other than that, I don't see many opportunities to manufacture spend. Furniture, electronics, and cell phones are all expensive, however, so you might decide to just save some money on a purchase you were already planning to make.

Select your bonus categories here.

World of Hyatt Double Points for Being You promotion

Also next quarter, World of Hyatt is running a promotion. Between April 1 and June 30, 2017, earn double base points on eligible stays starting with your second eligible stay. Register for the promotion here.

While you're at it, check out all the current hotel promotions I'm aware of on my Hotel Promotions page.

Do this now: activate 1st quarter 2017 bonus categories

December 20, 2016/ Free-quent Flyer

With the new year just around the corner, it's time to activate your credit card bonus categories for 2016. Here's my quarterly roundup of the available bonus categories and suggestions for maximizing them.

Citi Dividend

In the first quarter of 2017 Citi Dividend cards will offer 5% cash back on purchases made at The Home Depot and "Home Furnishing Stores." Since the total cash back you can earn with the card is capped at $300 per calendar year, unless you're planning to make some large purchases at The Home Depot anyway, it's probably best to wait until the second quarter bonus category of "Drug Stores" kicks in, unless you are able to combine the 5% cash back with other lucrative offers from Home Furnishing Stores.

Activate your Citi Dividend bonus earning here.

Chase Freedom

Chase Freedom "classic" cards will earn 5 Ultimate Rewards points per dollar spent at gas stations and on "Local Commuter Transportation" excluding parking and tolls. If you still have access to gas station manufactured spend, that's the obvious choice for maximizing this category. In my case I'll just switch from paying for my subway rides with my Barclaycard Arrival Plus card for the first quarter of 2016.

Activate your Chase Freedom bonus earning here.

US Bank Cash+

Here's the list of categories where you can earn 5% cash back on up to $2,000 in purchases with the Cash+ in the first quarter of 2016:

As you can see, there's pretty slim pickings here, although "Charity" and "Electronics Stores" remain available, which make the Cash+ a solid card for making Kiva loans and paying for Apple products, which are rarely available at a significant discount.

Select your US Bank Cash+ bonus categories here.

Discover it

In the first quarter of 2017 Discover it cards will earn 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in purchases in the categories of "Gas Stations, Ground Transportation, and Wholesale Clubs." If you've been taking advantage of the flood of offers for discounted membership and cash back at Sam's Club and other wholesale clubs, and have easy access to a location, your best bet is likely buying prepaid debit cards with your Discover card. Keep in mind that once you've earned cash back with a Discover it card, it can be redeemed for many gift cards at above face value, increasing your total return on your credit card spend.

To activate your Discover it bonus earning log into your Discover online banking account.

Do this now: Fall, 2016, registration roundup

September 16, 2016/ Free-quent Flyer

[Edit 9/16/16 9:50 pm: See Michael's comment for a datapoint of the 500-point Hyatt mobile booking bonus posting multiple times. As is usual for these promotions, the terms and conditions are vague enough that I either over- or under-interpreted them when I wrote this post Thursday night. In relevant part, they read:

"To earn 500 Hyatt Gold Passport® points under this offer, you must book a new stay on an Eligible Rate through the Hyatt App or the Hyatt Mobile Site. Both reservation and stay must be made and completed September 1, 2016 through November 30, 2016 at any Hyatt hotel, excluding M life resorts. Eligible Rate is defined in the Hyatt Gold Passport terms and conditions. All hotel reservations are subject to availability and must be made in advance.

Hyatt Gold Passport membership at time of stay is required and members must provide their membership number and be a registered guest of the room. Membership is free and enrollment is available at goldpassport.com or at a participating hotel. Only one 500 bonus point bonus may be earned per member, per stay, regardless of how many rooms are booked. This offer is subject to the complete terms and conditions of Hyatt Gold Passport. Please allow 2-3 weeks after stay is completed for points to be credited to account."

I apologize for the confusion.]

Registration is now open for a range of Fall, 2016, hotel promotions and 2016 fourth quarter credit card spending bonuses.

2016 fourth quarter credit card bonuses

If you have one or more Chase Freedom, Discover it, Citi Dividend, or US Bank Cash+ credit cards, it's time to register for their fourth quarter spending bonuses.

  • Chase Freedom. Earn 5 Ultimate Rewards points per dollar up to $1,500 spent at "Department Stores, Wholesale Clubs, and Drug Stores." For most people drug stores will be the easiest category to max out, although be aware that Vanilla brand prepaid debit cards cannot be easily liquidated at Walmart anymore.
  • Discover it. Earn 5% cash back on up to $1,500 spent at "Amazon.com, Department Stores and Sam's Club." Note that it's also possible to get more than 5% cash back if you redeem your cashback balance for discounted gift cards.
  • Citi Dividend. Earn 5% cash back, up to $300 total cash back per calendar year total, on purchases at "Best Buy and Department Stores."
  • US Bank Cash+. Select one of "gas stations," restaurants," or "grocery stores" to earn unlimited 2% cash back and two additional categories to earn 5% cash back on up to $2,000 in purchases. Here are the available 5% cash back categories for the fourth quarter of 2016:

As usual, your best bet is to select "Charity" and make $2,000 in Kiva loans, although the Cash+ is also one of the only cards to bonus spending at the Apple Store, so if you are planning electronics purchases over the holidays, that may be worthwhile as well.

Fall, 2016, hotel promotions

You can also find all the current hotel promotions I'm aware of on my Hotel Promotions page. I don't see any promotions that would affect my booking behavior, but since I'm currently on a Hyatt kick I do want to point out that all three of Hyatt's current promotions appear to be stackable for co-branded credit cardholders, since a Points + Cash night booked through Hyatt's mobile app for a stay before October 31, 2016, will:

  • Earn a 10% rebate on the points redeemed;
  • Earn a 500 point bonus for booking through the mobile app;
  • and count as a qualifying night towards your running "More Points. More Play." Qualifying Night total.

Note that since the 500 point mobile booking bonus can only be earned once, you only need to rebook a September and October Points + Cash stay through the mobile app if you only have a single stay planned and you booked it before the promotion began. There's no reason to rebook all your stays through the mobile app since it won't trigger additional bonus points.

Do this now: register for Q3 2016 cash back bonuses

June 15, 2016/ Free-quent Flyer

Registration is now open for cards offering rotating cash back bonus categories in the third quarter of 2016. Here's the rundown:

  • Chase Freedom. Earn 5 Ultimate Rewards points per dollar spent at restaurants and wholesale clubs, on up to $1,500 in combined purchases across all bonused merchants. This will be my go-to card for restaurant purchases starting July 1.
  • Citi Dividend. Earn 5% cash back at Hilton's portfolio of brands and on car rentals, up to a maximum of $300 in total cash back per calendar year on all bonused and unbonused purchases. I already earned all $300 in Citi Dividend cash back in the second quarter at drug stores, so I won't be using this card for the rest of the year.
  • Discover it (log into Discover first). Earn 5% cash back at home improvement stores and Amazon.com, on up to $1,500 in combined purchases across all bonused merchants. Home Depot sells $200 PIN-enabled Visa prepaid debit cards, so while it's not a huge money maker I will probably buy $1,400 worth of prepaid debit cards and purchase Amazon gift credit with the remaining $58.35 in bonused spend.
  • US Bank Cash+. Earn 5% cash back on up to $2,000 in purchases in two categories of your choice, and unlimited 2% cash back in one category of your choice. Here are the choices for the third quarter of 2016:

Unless you're planning a big cell phone or electronics purchase, as usual the strongest play here is to select "Charity" as your 5% cash back category and make $2,000 in Kiva loans during the third quarter, earning $100 in cash back, minus any defaults on the loans you select. There's no reason to pay attention to the 2% cash back categories, unless for some reason you don't have a card that earns 2% or more in cash back everywhere.

March 23, 2016

Do this now: register for 2016 second quarter cash back bonuses

March 23, 2016/ Free-quent Flyer

Second quarter registration is now open for credit cards earning quarterly rotating bonuses, and it's shaping up to be a pretty lucrative quarter.

Chase Freedom

Between April 1 and June 30, 2016, Chase Freedom cards earn 5 non-flexible Ultimate Rewards points per dollar spent at grocery stores (excluding Walmart and Target store locations) and wholesale clubs, on up to $1,500 in purchases during the quarter.

I have 2 Chase Freedom cards and will be maximizing this offer in the first few days of April by making a few trips to a local grocery store which sells prepaid debit cards.

Activate your bonus earning here, and remember to activate the bonus on each Chase Freedom card you carry.

Citi Dividend

After a dry year last year, the Citi Dividend has finally come back with a strong 5% cash back offer in the second quarter of 2016: drug stores.

The maximum amount of cash back you can earn with a Citi Dividend cash back is $300 per year. Unlike the other 5% cash back cards, however, you aren't limited to earning $75 in bonus cash back per quarter; you can earn all $300 in a single quarter at a 5% cash back merchant.

That means spending $6,000 at drug stores in the second quarter of 2016 will earn you $300 in cash back, and you can put the card back in your sock drawer for another year (or request a product change to a more lucrative credit card for ongoing spend, like the Citi Double Cash).

You should be able to register for your second quarter cash back here, or through your Citi online account.

Discover it/More

The Discover it (formerly the Discover More) offers 5% cash back on up to $1,500 spent at "restaurants and movies" in the second quarter of 2016. If you activated the double cash back offer in time, or are a new cardholder, you'll earn another 5% cash back at the end of your 12 month enrollment period.

Discover only bonuses purchases made after you enroll in the cashback bonus offer, so be sure to enroll immediately to make sure all your restaurant purchases in the second quarter are properly bonused.

Log into your Discover account and click here to register.

US Bank Cash+

The Cash+ is unique in that it lets you choose which categories you'd like to earn 5% cash back in, on up to $2,000 in purchases per quarter. Unfortunately, they're rarely very interesting from a manufactured spend perspective. Here are the 5% cash back options for the second quarter of 2016:

  • Select Clothing Stores
  • Cell Phones
  • Electronics Stores
  • Car Rentals
  • Gyms/Fitness Centers
  • Bookstores
  • Fast Food
  • Charity
  • Sporting Goods Stores
  • Department Stores
  • Furniture Stores
  • Movie Theaters

If you don't mind floating the cash, the best move as usual is to select "Charity" and make $2,000 in Kiva loans. You'll make $100 in cash back (minus any defaults and currency risks on your loans) and then let your Cash+ keep your Citi Dividend card company in the sock drawer.

You can select your one 2% cash back category and two 5% cash back categories here.

Do this now: activate Chase Freedom Q1 2016 bonus categories

December 16, 2015/ Free-quent Flyer

When it rains it pours. Just as Discover it, Citi Dividend, and US Bank Cash+ bonus categories are now available for registration, so are the Chase Freedom bonus categories for the first quarter of 2016.

The bonus categories for the first quarter of 2016 are purchases at "Gas Stations" and "Local Commuter Transportation."

If you live in or are able to travel to cities where 7-Eleven store locations are both coded as gas stations and sell PIN-enabled Visa gift cards, then this is a great opportunity to pick up Ultimate Rewards points on the cheap. If you don't, then you can at least earn some bonus Ultimate Rewards points on your gas purchases or by reloading your local transportation cards or buying monthly passes.

In any case, register now, before you forget.

Do this now: activate Citi Dividend Q1 2016 bonus categories

December 15, 2015/ Free-quent Flyer

The Citi Dividend credit card is absolutely the most frustrating of the quarterly cash back bonus category cards. That's for two reasons:

  1. Cash back is capped at $300 per calendar year across all bonused and non-bonused spend;
  2. Citi Dividend cash back bonus categories are terrible.

That's somewhat mitigated by the fact that you can often call in and request a retention bonus which can give you additional cash back on all your spend during a dud year (like 2015), and the fact that cash back can be earned in one year's bonus categories but credited against the $300 cash back limit in another year.

In any case, registration is now available for the Citi Dividend cash back bonus categories for the first quarter of 2016.

Most folks I assume will hold off on using their 2016 bonus cash back until the second quarter, when "Drug Stores" are a bonus category, but you should still register now, before you forget.

December 08, 2015/ Free-quent Flyer

Registration is now open (log into your Discover account first) for the Discover it cashback bonus categories of "Gas & Ground Transportation" for the first calendar quarter of 2016.

You'll earn 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in purchases in the bonus categories, and if you registered in time for the Discover it double cash promotion you'll earn the same amount again after the end of your promotional period.

This is a terrific offer if you have access to PIN-enabled prepaid debit cards at gas stations or convenience stores coded as gas stations, but if you don't have access to those at home (or while on the road), you still might consider using the bonus category to add value to any transportation passes or rail cards you plan to use throughout the year. And of course, 5-10% cash back on gas purchases isn't terrible either.

However you plan to use it, be sure to log into your Discover account and register now, before you forget.

Do this now: select your Cash+ bonus categories for 2016's first quarter

November 19, 2015/ Free-quent Flyer

I got a US Bank Cash+ card a few years back as a product change from my second Flexperks Travel Rewards card. Back then the Cash+ had a somewhat more lucrative earning structure, offering a $25 prepaid Visa card as a bonus whenever you redeemed $100 or more into a US Bank savings or checking account. They've since eliminated that bonus, but I nonetheless recently dusted off my Cash+ and began to use it as another uncapped 2% cash back card at grocery stores.

Yesterday I noticed that the link had appeared in my US Bank online account to select my Cash+ bonus categories for the first quarter of 2016. I don't see any major changes to the available categories this quarter, so I plan to select "Grocery Stores" as my uncapped 2% cash back category, and "Charity" and "Department Stores" as my 5% cash back categories (capped at $2,000 in quarterly bonus spend).

If you're planning to buy any new Apple devices in the first quarter of 2016, be aware that the Apple Store does count as an "Electronics Store," and I may decide at the last minute to select that category instead since it's relatively difficult to find big discounts on Apple hardware.

US Bank says it takes a few days for enrollment to take effect, so you'll want to select your bonus categories now, before you forget.

Do this now: activate Chase Freedom and Citi Dividend 4th quarter bonus categories

September 16, 2015/ Free-quent Flyer

Registration is now open for the Chase Freedom 4th quarter bonus categories. It's also supposed to be open for the Citi Dividend, but as of this writing I have not yet been able to activate my bonus cash back on that card.

Chase Freedom

Registration is now open for the Chase Freedom 4th quarter, 2015, bonus categories of "amazon.com, Zappos.com, audible.com and diapers.com." I think these are pretty weak bonus categories, depending on how much you plan to spend at Amazon.com. Personally, I don't spend enough money at Amazon to justify stocking up on gift credit, and in any case I can earn 5 Ultimate Rewards points per dollar year-round by buying Amazon.com gift cards at office supply stores with my Chase Ink Plus.

In any case, register each one of your Chase Freedom cards now, before you forget.

Citi Dividend

Registration is supposed to be open for the Citi Dividend 4th quarter, 2015, bonus categories of "Best Buy and department stores." The most straightforward play here is to buy $6,000 in $200 Visa gift cards from Sears to earn $300 in cash back, minus $201.55 in activation fees, for a profit of about $92.45, but that's not a very good deal since liquidating 29 $200 Visa gift cards is both annoying and uses up liquidation bandwidth that could be more profitably deployed elsewhere.

Alternatively, you could click through a portal like TopCashBack and earn another 1.25% cash back or the American AAdvantage shopping portal for 1 additional AAdvantage mile per dollar spent online at Best Buy.

Hopefully registration will actually be open by the time you read this!
